Internship Program

The predoctoral internship at the RichmondVA Medical Center in Virginia is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The next site visit will be during the academic year 2017.

Candidates for internship must be U.S. Citizens from APA-approved programs in clinical or counseling psychology and must be approved for internship by their schools. Further, candidates should anticipate that they would complete all doctoral requirements within one year following internship. No applicants from programs awarding degrees in areas other than psychology will be accepted.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Rehabilitation Psychology

The postdoctoral fellowship at the Richmond VA Medical Center in Virginia is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The Next site visit is expected in 2016.

All applicants must have completed all graduation requirements from an APA-accredited doctoral program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and an APA-accredited predoctoral internship in Psychology by September 1st of the fellowship year. As a desire to work with a veteran population is required, practicum or internship at a VHA facility is encouraged, but not mandatory. Given the specialty training in Rehabilitation Psychology, clinical experiences in this area is highly recommended.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (VISN-6 MIRECC)

The McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s (VAMC) VISN-6 Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Richmond, Virginia is part of the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment and is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). This fellowship is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. An application is in preparation with an anticipated submission date in Winter 2012.

The primary goal of the MIRECC Advanced Psychology Fellowship is to train clinical psychologists to become outstanding clinical researchers in high priority areas of VA mental health. The McGuire VAMC’s MIRECC Advanced Fellowship is designed to support the development of clinician-researchers in the area of post-deployment mental health, a high priority area within mental health. Fellows devote the majority of their time to patient oriented research and 25% to direct patient clinical care. Additionally, the fellowship encompasses education and administrative experiences.
