Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (VISN-6 MIRECC)

The Richmond VAMC’s MIRECC Advanced Fellowship supports the development of scientist-practitioners in the area of post-deployment mental health, which encompasses:

  • traumatic brain injury (TBI) and polytrauma rehabilitation,
  • posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
  • resilience and post-deployment adjustment,
  • substance abuse,
  • and other mental health concerns commonly faced by Service members and their families after  deployment.

The McGuire VAMC’s MIRECC Psychology Fellowship is part of a national program, the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment. Over the course of the two-year program, Fellows are trained in academic and health systems research, advanced clinical care service delivery, and program administration in an interdisciplinary setting. The fellowship combines individual mentored research and clinical training with state-of-the-art educational experiences utilizing local and national program resources. Through an individualized training plan, the program offers the potential for Fellows to develop expertise in an emphasis area within the scope of post-deployment mental health, such as TBI rehabilitation, risk and resiliency factors of PTSD, and substance abuse. Fellows spend a minimum of 10-15 hours/week in supervised, direct service delivery and 10-20 hours/week in clinical research activities.

An application for contingency accreditation was submitted to the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of the American Psychological Association (APA) in September 2013. An accreditation site visit was conducted in August 2014 and we are on the October 2014 CoA agenda. The APA Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation can be reached at the APA, 750 First St. NE, Washington DC 20002-4242, (202) 336-5979.
