The Predoctoral Internship at the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, North Carolina is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The next site visit will be during the academic year 2020.

A candidate for the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center Psychology Internship Program must be a U.S. citizen enrolled in an APA-approved Clinical or Counseling Psychology program. The Hefner VAMC abides by all APA guidelines and requirements.

Clinical Psychology Residency Program

The Clinical Psychology Residency at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The Residency year is devoted to the development of advanced clinical skills and the completion of a scholarly review paper. The Residency is 75% clinical and 25% research. Opportunities for research are an essential part of the program. The philosophy of our Residency program is that advanced comprehensive skills form the foundation for competent, independent, professional functioning as a psychologist. The focus of the Residency is on combining clinical experiential training which is cumulative, graded, and structured, with research opportunities. As part of their Residency year, the Resident will have opportunities for unique experience in the learning, development, and implementation of clinical demonstration projects, mental health research, and direct clinical care related to post-deployment mental health.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (VISN-6 MIRECC)

The Hefner Veterans Affairs Medical Center’s (VAMC) VISN-6 Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Salisbury, NC is part of the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment. This fellowship is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. An application is in preparation with an anticipated submission date in Spring 2013.

The primary goal of the MIRECC Advanced Psychology Fellowship is to train clinical psychologists to become outstanding clinical researchers in high priority areas of VA mental health. The Hefner VAMC’s MIRECC Advanced Fellowship is designed to support the development of clinician-researchers in the area of post-deployment mental health, a high priority area within mental health.  MIRECC Fellows spend 75% of their time on research training and productive research activities, and up to 25% of their time on VA clinical activities that support the Fellow’s professional goals, including preparation for Board Certification in Clinical Neuropsychology.
